Step 1

You will be given an x-ray of your esophagus. A regular X-ray does not show the esophagus, so you will be given a barium sulfate solution to drink, which does not allow X-rays to pass through. The image will show the relief of the esophagus.

Step 2

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is often used to diagnose diseases of the esophagus. During the procedure, the entire esophagus, stomach and duodenum are immediately examined. You will be given local anesthesia and all organs will be examined using an illuminated endoscope. The image is viewed through a monitor.

Step 3

Biopsy and histology will be done if necessary. To do this, they will take pieces of tissue, and a pathomorphologist will conduct a study under a microscope. This examination detects malignant tumors and allows timely identification of changes that precede cancer.

Step 4

You may also be prescribed an endoscopic optical coherence tomography. The examination is carried out using an endoscope with an optical sensor, which receives the reflection of the esophagus and transmits it to a computer monitor.

Step 5

A blood test for tumor markers does not always allow for an accurate diagnosis, since esophageal cancer is characterized only by an increase in the markers CYFRA 21-1, TPA, SCC, and they are present in the blood only in 40-45% of patients and when the disease has gone too far.

Step 6

Computed tomography is performed if previous examination methods do not allow an accurate diagnosis. The method allows you to comprehensively examine the esophagus, to determine the clear boundaries of foreign inclusions and lesions.

Step 7

An ultrasound scan is given to all patients to view the structure of the esophageal tissue.

Step 8

Esophagoscopy is performed if cancer is suspected. A sensor is inserted inside the esophagus and all walls are examined, if necessary, using this method, material is taken to examine not only the tissues of the esophagus, but also closely located lymph nodes.

Step 9

During bronchoscopy, the entire esophagus, vocal folds, trachea, and bronchi are examined.

Step 10

Positron emission tomography is used to detect all focal changes in the esophagus. Radioactive glucose is injected into a vein, which immediately accumulates in cancer cells. The scanner examines the degree of damage to the esophagus.

Step 11

The doctor can make the final diagnosis only as a result of a comprehensive study.
