The antibiotic Vancomycin belongs to the group of glycopeptides intended for the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It is advisable to prescribe the drug in the absence of a therapeutic result when using penicillins and cephalosporins or with their intolerance.

Composition and form of release

The medicine is presented in the pharmacy in the form of a powder for the manufacture of a solution for infusion in vials containing 0, 5 or 1 g of the active ingredient - vancomycin hydrochloride.

Vancomycin is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive microflora. The drug has a bactericidal effect, destroying staphylococci, streptococci, clostridia, corynebacteria. At the same time, the vast majority of representatives of gram-negative flora are resistant to the drug.


The drug is prescribed for the treatment of diseases, the causative agents of which are sensitive to the active ingredient:

  • sepsis;
  • endocarditis - the drug is used in monotherapy and in combination with aminoglycosides;
  • pneumonia, lung abscess;
  • meningitis;
  • osteomyelitis;
  • pseudomembranous colitis;
  • enterocolitis.

A course of treatment

Before starting therapy, it is advisable to analyze the sensitivity of the causative agent of the pathology to the drug. Since intramuscular injections are painful and can cause side effects, the introduction is carried out intravenously slowly. The dose and regimen of administration is determined by the doctor.

According to the instructions, adults are shown a dose of 0.5 g 4 times or 1 g twice a day.

A newborn child under 1 month of age is prescribed 15 mg / kg of weight, then for a week at 10 mg / kg with an interval of 12 hours, for children over 1 month old - the same dosage, reducing the interval to 6-8 hours.

Intravenous drip is carried out for 1 hour at a rate not exceeding 10 mg / min.

Side effects

The negative consequences of drug therapy include:

  • reactions of intolerance to the constituents of the agent;
  • dyspepsia, pseudomembranous colitis;
  • violation of hematopoiesis (thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, and so on);
  • renal dysfunction;
  • ototoxic manifestations;
  • dizziness;
  • chills, reactions in the area of ​​the injection.

Side effects can be caused by rapid infusion and are manifested by anaphylaxis, redness of the upper body, spasm of the muscles of the back and thoracic region. In this case, the administration of the drug is stopped. Reactions usually take place within 20 minutes, but sometimes they can persist for several hours.


Drug treatment is prohibited when:

  • pregnancy (1 trimester) and lactation;
  • kidney failure;
  • intolerance to the constituents of the remedy;
  • neuritis of the auditory nerve.
