Hospice in English means a medical institution in which terminally ill people are living out their last days. The main idea of such establishments is to allow the doomed to live out their last days calmly and as comfortably as possible. Hospices do not treat, but simply alleviate the suffering of terminally ill people. The first hospices in world history appeared in the 6th century. But in Russia, their history is not so rich - the first department for cancer patients was opened only in the fall of 1903 in Moscow.

Today there are 7 hospices in Moscow - one for each district of the capital. At the same time, according to world standards calculated by the World Health Organization (WHO), one hospice should serve about 400,000 people. Simple calculations show that there is a sorely lack of hospices in Moscow.

Hospices in Moscow

Hospice usually includes several services:

- inpatient department;

- department for social work with patients;

- outpatient and polyclinic service (or the so-called field service);

- other support services.

To send a sick relative to hospice does not mean to refuse him. Here, the presence of relatives and friends around the patient is possible around the clock. In the hospice, the physical suffering of the doomed patient is simply noticeably alleviated.

The assistance provided in such medical institutions in Moscow usually deals with various legal issues (for example, solving problems with inheritance, etc.), social and psychological problems. Moreover, they work not only with patients, but also with their relatives. Also, on the basis of the hospice, volunteers are trained in caring for seriously ill people.

Despite the fact that the hospice, in fact, is not a medical institution, doctors of the highest category, professionals with a capital letter, are accepted here. They, as a rule, have a wealth of experience working with patients with oncology and know how the disease progresses, and they are also aware of what stage of the disease their patients are in, and to the maximum contribute to a more comfortable one (if such a concept can be applied in this case) their hospital stay.

The advantage of hospice is that the patient is in a semi-home atmosphere, and not in a hospital. Indeed, in most cases, seriously ill patients end their lives in the intensive care wards of an ordinary hospital.

Hospices are divided by age categories - into adults (they are accepted here from the age of 18) and children. The only requirement for hospice patients is registration in the area where the hospice is located. Relatives of the patient are referred to this medical institution either with the help of a local doctor or with the help of a specialist in the hospice itself. The patient's stay in the hospice is not limited. Doctors say that there are rare exceptions when a person recovers and leaves a medical institution in order to start a new life. But, unfortunately, this happens very, very rarely, since the 4th stage of cancer is almost the final diagnosis.

There are many open vacancies in hospices. But in most cases, these are free positions for volunteers who are able to help patients for free.

Paid hospice in Moscow

Hospice is a free medical facility. But, of course, due to the fact that funding comes from the budget, and it is far from great, the level of comfort is not the highest here. Therefore, there are also private hospices in the capital, where the same services are provided for money.

The main difference between commercial centers is that the level of comfort in them is an order of magnitude higher than in government institutions. The wards have everything you need for life: a TV, good quality beds, an improved bathroom, etc. Also, paid hospices usually have their own cuisine, which is very close to a restaurant one, i.e.the food is much better and tastier, and is also prepared for the patient, taking into account his preferences.

As for the prices, the management of such hospices claims that they are quite loyal and perfectly match the price-quality ratio. True, it is worth considering the fact that in this type of hospice the patient's stay directly depends on how long they pay for him. As soon as payments stop arriving, the person is sent home.
