Step 1

L-thyroxine is a synthetic drug that has a positive effect on the growth and development of the body, accelerates the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, increases tissue oxygen demand, and tidies up the work of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Take this drug only as directed by your doctor. It is used in the treatment of thyroid diseases: diffuse and nodular goiter, thyroid cancer, hypothyroidism. In addition, l-thyroxine is indicated for patients as a restorative agent after surgical treatment of thyroid cancer.

Step 2

L-thyroxine, like any medicine, has a number of contraindications. Do not take this medicine if your body is sensitive to its components. L-thyroxine, as a rule, is not prescribed for patients with hyperthyroidism, acute myocardial infarction, adrenal insufficiency.

Step 3

This drug is available in the form of white tablets. Take it 30 minutes before a meal, unless your doctor has prescribed a different treatment regimen. The dosage of l-thyroxine depends on the type of disease, its severity and the patient's age. For example, with hypothyroidism, 1/2 tablet of the drug is prescribed once a day, with diffuse goiter - 1-2 tablets, with recovery in the postoperative period - 1-3 tablets per day.

Step 4

Be aware that side effects may occur when taking l-thyroxine. These include irritability, hyperexcitability, sleep disturbances, pain in the heart, and weight loss. Stool disturbance and increased sweating may rarely occur.

Step 5

Take l-thyroxine with caution if you have diabetes, heart failure, or angina pectoris. The elderly using this drug, as well as patients with hypothyroidism and people with insufficient adrenal function, should be under constant supervision. When interacting with other drugs, l-thyroxine can enhance or weaken its actions, so be sure to inform your doctor about the drugs you are taking.
