It is believed that earlier people knew much more about the properties of plants, about their dangers and benefits. It is not for nothing that most of the information regarding herbal medicine comes to us from ancient sources and, mixing with the data of modern research, allows us to understand how a particular plant or its extract affects the body.

There is an opinion that in the course of evolution, largely due to the progress of civilization, people have lost a lot of knowledge about the world around them.

What is special about vegetables?

On closer examination, it becomes clear that almost every plant, including vegetables traditionally used for food, contains a number of biologically active substances, if they do not help to cure a number of diseases, then certainly necessary for the prevention of the development of certain pathological conditions.

In particular, the tissues of the vast majority of vegetables are rich in antioxidants. They protect the cell membrane from oxidation, damage by toxic substances. The result is a slowdown in the aging of tissues in the human body.

The dietary fiber contained in vegetables normalizes the functions of the digestive system, which has a number of positive consequences: accelerating the elimination of toxic substances from the body, preventing intestinal stagnation, and generally having a positive effect on metabolism in the body.

Trace elements, vegetables contain them in a form that is as easy as possible for the body to assimilate. Therefore, replacing natural trace elements with dietary supplements and pharmacy vitamins is not entirely equivalent. Biologically active substances of plant origin are more easily absorbed. The multifaceted effect of trace elements contained in vegetables can be seen in the example of potassium: it is found in a large number of crops traditionally used in food. In the body, potassium has an important effect: it normalizes the activity of the nervous system, participates in the regulation of blood pressure, and optimizes the functioning of the kidneys.

We should not forget about the high content of vitamins, their precursors and vitamin-like substances. A classic example is carrots, a rich source of carotene, a substance that, when ingested, is converted there into vitamin A. In addition, many traditional vegetables are a rich source of vitamin C, which is necessary, among other things, for people living in northern regions with a harsh climate.

Are there any contraindications?

Along with information about the benefits of vegetables, for certain diseases, for example, eggplant and cabbage for gout, dill, cucumbers and melons as diuretics, cabbage and dill for improving sleep, it is necessary to mention contraindications. If you have an established diagnosis, you should not self-medicate with natural remedies. Before using any of them, you need to consult your doctor.

Of course, the primacy in the treatment of serious diseases inevitably belongs to drugs, but one should not neglect the auxiliary means, information about which has come down to us from time immemorial.
