The electronic cigarette, invented by a Chinese homemade cigarette, has gradually gained worldwide popularity, and many people are seriously considering it as a worthy alternative to regular smoking. And yet it is not so harmless.

Is there any harm from electronic cigarettes and what is it?
Is there any harm from electronic cigarettes and what is it?

Smoking an electronic cigarette

When you smoke an electronic cigarette, the liquid, which in most cases contains nicotine, evaporates. The volume of nicotine in this case can range from 0 to 16 milligrams in one cartridge. The main component of the liquid is propylene glycol, which is responsible for the formation of vapor. To add flavor, various flavors are added to it, for example menthol or vanillin.

Propylene glycol is often used in theaters and discos to create fog.

International research

To date, 3 large toxicological studies have been carried out, the purpose of which was to identify the degree of danger of smoking an electronic cigarette. The most devastating study was the FDA. In particular, the Americans found that, among other things, diethylene glycol and nitrosamine, which are officially recognized as carcinogens, that is, substances that can provoke cancer, are part of the smoking mixture.

Another study, carried out by New Zealand scientists at the request of the manufacturer of electronic cigarettes, also revealed the presence of nitrosamine in them, but in the end it was concluded that although such cigarettes are unsafe, smoking them is still less harmful than using regular tobacco.

The Greeks also tried to find out how great the harm from smoking the novelty is, but they could not collect enough data to draw more or less meaningful conclusions. Nevertheless, they put forward a proposal to equate an electronic cigarette with a regular one and prohibit its smoking in public places.

Pulmonologists say propylene glycol is irritating to the respiratory tract and is seriously concerned about the effects of prolonged e-cigarette smoking.

The harm of secondhand smoke

Since it is still not clear how and to what extent electronic cigarettes harm smokers themselves, it is even more difficult to assess the danger posed by a novelty to people around them, that is, so-called passive smokers. But in any case, we can say that this environment is less harmful than with ordinary smoking, since only a small amount of toxic substances gets into the air. In addition, steam particles immediately turn into a gaseous state and gradually literally dissolve in the atmosphere. Smoke particles remain hanging in the air, continuing to harm the environment for a fairly long period of time.

Electronic cigarettes are addictive too

Many smokers immediately love the idea of an electronic cigarette and expect to use it to overcome their addiction to smoking. But, as practice has shown, the transition to a new way of using tobacco did not affect nicotine addiction in any way, but simply changed to a different form. And the abundance of flavors, allowing you to constantly change the type of liquid you smoke, only aggravates the situation and may even become an impetus for drug use.
