Scrofula is the popular name for exudative diathesis, which can appear for a variety of reasons. Most often, the disease affects children under the age of 10, but in rare cases it also occurs in adults.

Symptoms of scrofula in adults

At the initial stage of scrofula, small yellow crusts appear behind the ears, on the scalp, and on the neck. When combing, the golden crusts are peeled off, an even red surface is formed under them. In the future, a secondary infection may join and deep wounds appear at the site of the crusts.

With the tuberculous form of scrofula, the patient experiences general weakness, malaise, and the body temperature rises. A purulent rhinitis appears, otitis media, inflammation of the lymph nodes may occur. Joints are affected, there is pain in the back, aches in the limbs.

Diagnosis of scrofula in adults

Golden crusts and exudate are carefully examined in laboratory conditions. The patient is prescribed diagnostics for tuberculosis, AIDS, and is given a referral to an immunologist for a detailed examination. It is worth noting that scrofula in adults is most often caused by the presence of Koch's bacillus in the blood. At the same time, the patient can remain healthy, the active form of tuberculosis does not develop, but without eliminating the cause, it will be impossible to get rid of scrofula with the help of symptomatic treatment.

Scrofula treatment

As a symptomatic treatment, the patient is prescribed zinc ointment, which needs to be lubricated on all affected surfaces 2 times a day, antiallergic drugs, vitamin complexes, immunostimulants.

With the tuberculous form of scrofula, the patient is hospitalized and inpatient treatment is carried out. Antibiotics are prescribed: Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Pyrazinamide, hepatoprotectors, B vitamins in injections, ATP in the form of sodium salt, glutamic acid. After 30 days, tests are taken again to determine the Koch's bacillus. If necessary, antibiotic therapy is continued.

Alternative treatment of scrofula

Along with traditional treatment, alternative methods can be used. Herbal medicine helps to quickly get rid of golden crusts, relieve itching and inflammation, and prevent the formation of deep wounds.

The affected areas can be lubricated 5-6 times a day with an infusion of chamomile, calendula, sage, yarrow, string. To prepare the infusion, you need to brew tbsp. with a slide of dry crushed raw materials with a glass of boiling water, leave for 2 hours. Wipe the affected skin with a filtered solution.

For oral administration, a decoction should be prepared from a mixture of chamomile, string, elecampane and nettle. All ingredients are taken in equal proportions, mixed in one container. Then 1 tbsp. medicinal raw materials are brewed with a glass of boiling water, insisted for 1-2 hours and a third of a glass of strained broth is taken 30 minutes before meals 3 times a day.
