Indications and contraindications
Phthalazol is prescribed to patients most often with bacterial diarrhea. Also, this medicine can be used for:

- colitis and enterocolitis;
- gastroenteritis;
- exacerbations of chronic dysentery.
In some cases, doctors may prescribe Phthalazol after bowel surgery.
Contraindications to the use of this remedy are:
- allergy to the components of the drug;
- all kinds of kidney and liver diseases;
- Graves' disease;
- glomerulonephritis;
- intestinal obstruction;
- some blood diseases.
Also, you can not be treated with this drug during pregnancy. This medicine is also not prescribed for lactating women.
Instructions for use
The attending physician selects the specific dosages of this drug, depending on the sensitivity of the intestinal microflora to sulfonamides, individually. With diarrhea, however, most often patients take Ftalazol according to the following scheme:
- the first two days - 2 tablets every 4 hours;
- until the 4th day - 2 tab. every 6 hours;
- until the 6th day - 2 tab. every 8 hours
In the future, the following treatment regimen may also be prescribed:
- the first 2 days - 10 tab. per day;
- up to the 4th day - 8 tab;
- until the 6th day - 6 tab.
In any case, the daily dose of this drug for adults should not exceed 7 g, and a single dose should not exceed 2 g. For children under 3 years of age, the maximum daily dose is reduced to 0.2 g per kilogram of weight, up to 6 years - to 0.4-0.8 g per kg.
Possible side effects
Take Ftalazol for diarrhea and in other cases only in accordance with the recommendations of the attending physician. If side effects appear, this remedy must be replaced with another. Most often, when taking Phthalazol in patients, the following negative reactions of the body are observed:
- anemia;
- stomatitis;
- nausea and gastritis.
With prolonged uncontrolled use of the drug in patients, kidney stones may form.
Drug analogues
If necessary, you can replace this drug with diarrhea, for example, with medications such as:
- Ftazin;
- Oriprim;
- Biseptol;
- Dvaseptol.
