Concussion refers to traumatic brain injury. This is the most common diagnosis in pediatric traumatology. Concussion is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and headache. But sometimes the signs appear several hours after the concussion, and it is quite difficult to identify them.
In adults and children of school age, concussion can be detected by several main signs. Pay attention if the patient had loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache. Retrograde amnesia often occurs - memory loss, in which the patient does not remember how he fell, and also forgets the events preceding the injury.
In case of injuries in preschool children, pay attention to signs of concussion such as pain, slowing or increased heart rate, changes in blood pressure, sweating, pallor of the skin, lethargy. The child will be moody, irritable. Problems with falling asleep and sleeping may appear.
Keep in mind that in babies under one year old, concussion often occurs without significant symptoms. Due to the nature of the child's body, symptoms may appear several hours after the injury, after a period of satisfactory condition. Loss of consciousness immediately after injury is rare. During the day, there may be vomiting, regurgitation, poor appetite, gratuitous crying, pallor, drowsiness, sleep disturbance.
Show restraint and composure if you discover one of the most disturbing symptoms of a concussion in your child - post-traumatic blindness. Temporary loss of vision can develop immediately after injury and persist for several minutes or even hours. Later, vision is restored. The reasons for this condition have not been studied yet.
Be sure to see a doctor if you or your child has had a head injury. A surgeon and a neurologist identify a concussion based on specific symptoms: twitching of the eyeballs, impaired coordination of movements, and other signs. An x-ray will definitely be done, which will exclude cracks and fractures of the skull. You may be prescribed other tests to check for focal brain changes or swelling. Timely diagnostics and treatment started will help to avoid serious consequences.
