The eruption of milk teeth in infants begins on average at 5-7 months, but the child may experience discomfort even several weeks before the appearance of the first tooth. To appear above the gum, the milk tooth must pass through the bone tissue and then through the mucous membrane. This is a painful process that causes anxiety, crying, and loss of appetite in babies. To alleviate the child's condition, parents resort to a wide variety of methods, but the most effective is the use of special medicines.

Step 1

The choice of tools designed to facilitate teething and relieve pain is quite large. It is impossible to find a panacea among this variety, but you can pick up a gel or ointment that suits your baby. Such funds are usually used from three to five months, there are also drugs that are allowed for children no younger than one year old.

Step 2

All drugs used to relieve pain during teething of deciduous teeth are intended for topical use. However, their composition is selected in such a way that the baby will not harm himself, even if he swallows the medicine. The active ingredients of such drugs are anesthetics (benzocaine, lidocaine) - they reduce the sensitivity of the mucous membrane. Also, the composition of the drug may contain anti-inflammatory components, including those of plant origin, that help relieve swelling of the gums and reduce pain. Sweeteners and flavors can be added to make the medication more pleasant to the baby.

Step 3

Among the funds, the main active ingredient of which is lidocaine, include drugs such as "Kamistad" and "Kalgel", "Dentinox" is also used, the analgesic effect of which is enhanced and prolonged by the addition of polidocanol. "Kalgel" should be used with caution in children suffering from atopic dermatitis - a large amount of sweetener in the preparation can cause the appearance of new rashes.

Step 4

For children who are allergic to lidocaine, doctors recommend the herbal preparation Baby Doctor. Its ingredients, which include extracts of chamomile, calendula and marshmallow root, reduce inflammation and relieve pain. If the child is already one year old, you can use the Holisal gel. It has a longer lasting effect than other drugs.

Step 5

Gels and ointments used for teething are applied to the inflamed areas of the gums and act almost immediately, but the effect of their use can hardly be called long-lasting - it can last from 15 minutes to 2-3 hours. Reapplication of the drug is usually allowed after a few hours.

Step 6

You can apply the product with a clean finger or a cotton swab to the gum mucosa. After distributing a small amount of the drug over the inflamed area, rub it into the mucous membrane with gentle movements.

Step 7

You should not smear the gums of a child before feeding - this applies to both infants and children who have already learned to chew solid food. Anesthetics reduce the sensitivity of the mucous membranes in the mouth, so sucking can be difficult. Older children may refuse to eat because the numbness of the gums and tongue will prevent them from chewing, and the taste of the drug may join the taste of the food. It is best to apply the medicine about 30 minutes before feeding.
