"Rickets" is a word familiar to many parents. The disease behind this word affects children in the first two years of life. In Russia, the incidence of rickets is 65%. Living standards are improving, but the number of diseases is not decreasing. As a rule, children suffering from rickets have a whole bunch of diseases. The main cause of rickets is a lack of incoming calcium and vitamin D from food or a lack of formation of the latter in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.
The rapid increase in body weight in the first months of a child's life should alert parents. The faster weight gain occurs in the first months after birth, the more he needs calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D, therefore, the higher the possibility of developing rickets. Signs that should alert parents: - anxiety and increased excitability of the baby;
- baldness of the back of the head of the child;
- increased sweating with a specific sour odor;
- low muscle tone;
- bad sleep;
Previously, there was an opinion that rickets goes away by itself by the age of four. This is a misconception. If rickets is not treated, persistent bone deformities of the skeleton (scoliosis) and flat feet remain for the rest of their lives. Caries develops, first of milk, and then of permanent teeth. Unexpected bone fractures and growth retardation are possible. A frequent companion of rickets is anemia and myopia at school age. A definite link has been found between rickets in infancy and osteoporosis in old age.
Medical treatment consists in the appointment of vitamin D3. Vitamin intake should be started as early as possible. For babies up to 3 months, the drug is given in drops in a daily dose of 2000 IU for 3-5 days. Drops should be diluted in a spoonful of milk, and not in a bottle, as this does not achieve the desired concentration of the active substance.
For the treatment of rickets, alternating salt and pine baths are recommended. To prepare a salt bath, take 100 grams of sea or table salt in a bucket of water at a temperature of 36-37 degrees Celsius. For a pine bath, take 0.5 tablespoons of pine extract in a bucket of water at a temperature of 36-37 degrees Celsius. The course is designed for two weeks. The duration of the bath is 7-12 minutes. After the bath, the child must be washed with fresh water a degree lower than the bath being taken and rubbed with a towel. Then put to bed.
