Scheuermann-Mau disease is a progressive pathology of the spine, soft tissues of the back (kyphosis), which occurs during the growth of the body. Kyphosis is a curvature of the spine that is curved backward.

Scheuermann-Mau disease, its causes

The human spine normally has three natural curves: the cervical spine is slightly tilted forward, the thoracic spine is slightly backward, and the lumbar spine is slightly forward. These curves distribute the load evenly over the entire spine. Kyphosis is a deviation from natural angles, the norm of which is 20-40 degrees. With a deviation from the vertical axis by more than 40 degrees, a deformation of the spine is observed. In Scheuermann-Mau disease, this angle is 45-75 degrees, in connection with such a redistribution of the load, wedge-shaped deformity of the vertebrae develops, Schmorl's hernia appears, and thickening of the ligaments occurs.

The thickened ligaments change the correct development of the vertebrae during growth, subsequently leading to their deformation.

The reasons for the development of Scheuermann-Mau disease have not been established. The most likely is a genetic predisposition to the disease, as well as some bone injuries during adolescence. The development of the disease is presumably influenced by osteoparotic processes that appear in the spine for unknown reasons. One of the causes of the disease is also a violation of muscle tissue.

Symptoms and treatment of Scheuermann-Mau disease

Symptoms of Scheuermann-Mau disease appear in adolescents at puberty (10-15 years). It is not possible to determine the onset of the disease using an X-ray examination. The disease is often detected when parents notice a violation of the child's posture. In some cases, pain appears between the shoulder blades, usually pain occurs only with severe deformity. Kyphosis usually progresses slowly. With the disease, the rigidity of the spine appears, subsequently the pain syndrome increases simultaneously with the deformity. Some patients, together with Scheuermann-Mau disease, develop scoliosis (about 30%), in which case the deformity occurs in a different plane.

Scheuermann-Mau kyphosis occurs in approximately 5% of the population. Most have no neurological symptoms, in some cases the pathology leads to dysfunctions of the heart and lungs.

Scheuermann-Mau disease is treated with conservative and surgical methods. Conservative therapy includes massage, exercise therapy, manual therapy. In adolescence, it is possible to wear a special corset. At an angle of kyphosis of 75 degrees and the appearance of violations of the functions of the heart and respiratory organs, surgical treatment is prescribed.
