Common motherwort (it is also called motherwort heartwort) is a perennial herb, reaching 1.5-2 m in length. But only the upper flowering parts of the motherwort are considered medicinal raw materials. They are used to prepare medicinal products, in particular tinctures.
Useful properties of motherwort
Motherwort herb contains essential oils, alkaloids, ascorbic acid, glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, sugar and tannins, bitterness and other valuable elements. So, due to the high content of alkaloids, motherwort herb is prescribed for diseases of the digestive system, to restore the work of the heart muscle, and lower blood pressure.
Preparations based on motherwort herb have antibacterial and soothing effects. At the same time, they are prescribed for the treatment of neuralgia and heart disease, weakened immunity and for the normalization of sleep.
Taking motherwort tincture increases the effectiveness of the anticonvulsant drugs taken.
How to make motherwort tincture at home
To prepare an alcoholic tincture, you will need dried motherwort herb (1 part) and alcohol (5 parts). The raw materials are poured with alcohol, after which the mixture is transferred into glassware, which is tightly corked and placed in a dark, cool place. The drug is insisted for 30-31 days, thoroughly shaking the contents of the bottle every day. Then the mixture is filtered. A single dose of tincture (30-35 drops) is diluted with 1/2 tbsp. cold boiled water. This medication is taken three to four times a day. The strength of the action of motherwort tincture is many times superior to that of valerian.
If alcohol tincture is contraindicated, it is recommended to take a water-based drug. Such drugs are often prescribed for pregnant women, during lactation, children and persons with alcohol dependence. To make a drug, you will need 2 tablespoons. chopped dry motherwort herb and 2 glasses of water. The grass is poured with boiled water, insisted in a thermos for at least 3 hours, and then filtered. An aqueous infusion of motherwort is taken 30 minutes before meals, 1/4 cup three times a day. The treatment course lasts 2-3 months.
Contraindications: thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, arterial hypotension, bradycardia and age up to 2 years.
In addition, the infusion can be prepared according to this recipe: pour 13-15 g of dry crushed herbs into 200 ml of boiling water, cover the container with a lid and place in a water bath for 15 minutes. In this case, the mixture is stirred from time to time. Then the drug is infused for 40-45 minutes and filtered. The prepared infusion is diluted with boiled cold water to 200 ml. Take 1/3 cup twice a day one hour before meals.
