The danger of radiation worries people more and more. And the main question is how to protect yourself from this. This is not surprising, it is worth remembering the disasters at Chernobyl and Mayak. that took many lives. And the construction of the nuclear power plant does not stop. But it happens that the "peaceful atom" becomes aggressive, then everyone who is nearby at this moment can experience all the "delights" of radiation …

Step 1

In order to know how to protect yourself from radiation, you must first have a clear idea of what it is. Radiation is ionizing radiation, and radioactivity is the instability of the nuclei of some atoms, which manifests itself in their ability to spontaneously decay, which is accompanied by ionizing radiation. At the moment, there are five types of radioactive particles - alpha particles, beta particles, gamma radiation, neutrons and X-rays. Now let's talk about everything in order and how to protect yourself from it.

Step 2

Alpha particles are fairly heavy, positively charged particles. They are helium nuclei. Even one such particle is enough to eventually destroy a living organism or, at least, kill the bulk of its cells. However, it is believed that alpha particles have a fairly low penetrating power, and you can protect yourself from them, if not with a piece of paper, then with one layer of clothing.

Step 3

Beta particles are ordinary electrons. But behind the apparent simplicity hides a stronger penetrating ability. Thick stone or wood walls are needed to protect against particles of this kind. If the radiation source is outside, then inside the apartment you can feel more or less safe.

Step 4

Gamma radiation - has the same nature as visible light, but much more penetrating power. More precisely, this type of radiation is the most dangerous, since it is almost impossible to avoid. Even a huge stone wall cannot guarantee security.

Step 5

Neutrons are electrical neutral particles. They arise mainly near reactors. To ensure your safety, it is better not to go there.

Step 6

X-rays - Similar to gamma rays, but with significantly lower energy. But if you do not protect yourself from gamma radiation, then from X-rays - it is quite possible, with the help of an impenetrable screen. In order to protect yourself and your family, you should have a dosimeter and try not to be in an area where radiation exceeds 100 roentgens.
