Hiccups occur as a result of jerky movements of the diaphragm. The reasons for this unpleasant phenomenon are different. Moreover, hiccups often appear even in perfectly healthy people.
Hiccups: causes of occurrence
The most common causes of hiccups in a healthy person are:
- hypothermia (especially in young children);
- the use of carbonated drinks;
- overeating (if the food is solid and dry);
- an excess of alcohol in the body;
- stressful situations.
The usual hiccups disappear within 5-20 minutes. In turn, hiccups that last more than 48 hours may be a sign of a serious illness. It can be caused by:
- multiple sclerosis;
- head injury;
- damage or irritation of the phrenic / vagus nerve, etc.
Based on this, in case of prolonged debilitating hiccups, it is necessary to urgently undergo a medical examination.
How to get rid of hiccups in folk ways
If you have the usual hiccups, you can try to get rid of it yourself using folk methods. Take a deep breath, hold your breath, and try to squeeze your diaphragm as tightly as possible with your chest muscles. In this case, the diaphragm relaxes and gradually stops contracting. The longer you stay in this state, the more chances you have of getting rid of the hiccups quickly.
Try drinking regular drinking water in small sips, pinching your nose with your fingers. Sips should be done frequently and without interruption. After about 25 sips, the hiccups should stop. You can also use the method that has long been used by ballerinas: with your hands behind your back, lean forward a little, and then take quick sips of water from a cup held by another person.
Another popular remedy is chamomile tea. However, this method takes about 30 minutes to brew the drink. Chamomile contains substances that can relax the muscular system and slow down the contractions of the diaphragm, which are the main causes of hiccups.
The next tip isn't for everyone - to stop the hiccups, try standing on your hands. Alternatively, lie on the bed so that your head is well below the level of the diaphragm. This method is considered to be quite effective.
Whichever method you choose, remember that natural hiccups last 5 to 20 minutes. If it has exceeded the norm, seek immediate medical attention.
