It is available in the form of a powder of 50 and 100 mg, tablets of 100 mg (for adults) and 5 and 50 mg (for children), as well as solutions in a vial and ampoules.

"Phenobarbital" acts on the human body as a sedative, hypnotic and anticonvulsant. The drug relieves seizures by suppressing nerve impulses in the central nervous system, reduces the effect of the amino acid. It is important to remember while taking this drug that it lowers bilirubin levels and improves metabolism, that is, reduces the effectiveness of other drugs.

The cost of this medicine is low - it starts from 12 rubles. But, despite this price, it is not so easy to find this remedy in a pharmacy, and you can only buy it with a doctor's prescription. When traveling, it is important to remember that the drug is prohibited in some countries.

Indications for use

This medicine is prescribed for epilepsy, acute seizures, tetanus, hemolytic disease of the newborn. It is also used as a sedative to reduce fear, anxiety and tension.

For children, the drug is released in the form of a solution. It is given to the child before bedtime, usually 2 times a day - before daytime and nighttime sleep. For children under 6 months, the daily dose should not exceed 0.05 g, a child from 6 months to 1 year is given 0.01 g per day, up to 2 years old - 0.02 g, 3-4 years old - 0.03 g, 5 -6 years old - 0.04 g, 7-9 years old - 0.05 g, 10-14 years old - 0.075 g.

For adults, the number of doses and the dose is selected by the doctor individually. As a sedative, it is prescribed from 10 to 200 mg, and as a hypnotic - up to 0.2 g before bedtime. Contraindications and side effects

"Phenobarbital" should not be used for kidney and liver diseases, acute porphyria, alcohol and drug addiction, myasthenia gravis, in the first trimester of pregnancy and lactation.

If taken incorrectly and overdose, side effects occur. Due to the strong effect of this drug, dizziness, ataxia, hallucinations and insomnia may appear, and hyperactivity in children is possible.

Anemia, thrombocytopenia, osteoporosis, bradycardia and low blood pressure, vomiting, nausea, and constipation occur due to improper or prolonged use of this drug. Barbitur dependence also develops, liver function is disrupted.

"Phenobarbital" is a psychotropic and narcotic drug that has a strong effect on the nervous system. With the regular use of this remedy, a person becomes dependent, therefore in Russia there are restrictions on its sale. It is included in the list of essential medicines, but it can only be bought with a doctor's prescription. In hospitals, it is kept in a safe, because Phenobarbital is included in list B and III, that is, its circulation is limited in the territory of our country.

Pharmacies sell three analogues of this drug: Dormiral, Luminal and Barbital. However, there are also combined release forms, that is, this active substance is contained in other drugs.
