A certain lipid is formed in the human liver, which is necessary for normal metabolism and cell formation. It's called cholesterol and has many beneficial functions. There are two types of this substance: low density and high. The former are called "bad": if their level in the blood rises, it causes diseases of the cardiovascular system. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor this indicator and know the rate of cholesterol in the blood.

Blood cholesterol

The human liver produces cholesterol, a special substance that is a naturally occurring fatty alcohol. Up to 80% of cholesterol is produced in the human body, and part of it comes from food - mainly fatty products of animal origin. Cholesterol has many different functions: it forms cell membranes, produces sex hormones, is used to produce bile, creates vitamin D, and helps metabolize other vitamins. You cannot treat cholesterol as a substance harmful to human health: its deficiency will affect the state of the body no better than an excess.

There are two types of this substance: low and high density lipoproteins. Both are necessary for the proper functioning of the body, but with an increased level of the former, so-called atherosclerotic disorders occur and plaques are formed in the vessels. The second type of cholesterol must be contained in human blood in large quantities; it protects blood vessels from various changes.

Therefore, when doctors talk about the rate of cholesterol in the blood, they primarily mean the ratio of the good and bad types of this substance.

The rate of cholesterol in the blood

Some tests can only assess the level of total cholesterol in the blood, but they are useful: if the amount of this lipid is elevated, then most likely, "bad" cholesterol is involved. Although it is desirable to carry out analyzes for the content of both types of lipoproteins, since there may be a situation when total cholesterol is normal, but the content of low density lipids is very high, and there is little "good" cholesterol.

This combination is most common among people over 60 years old: high-density cholesterol is produced worse by the body, and unhealthy diet and bad habits increase the number of "bad" species.

The norms depend on the sex of the person: women should have less cholesterol in their blood. The content of this substance in the blood is usually measured in millimoles per liter. The norm of total cholesterol for men is from 3.5 to 6 mmol / l, for women - from 3 to 5. In this case, in males, low-density lipoproteins ("bad") should be from 2, 2 to 4, 8, and in women - from 1.95 to 4.5 mmol / l. The remaining amount of cholesterol is accounted for by "good" lipoproteins.

An increased level of cholesterol in the blood indicates the development of serious diseases, which may not yet be accompanied by other symptoms. Therefore, it is very important to get tested regularly.
