Essential oils are substances with a specific odor that are released from various parts of plant organisms: flowers, fruits, seeds, wood, roots, resin. One of the main properties of essential oils is their volatility.
The rich composition, represented by a wide range of biologically active substances, allows essential oils to actively influence the body. That is why they are widely used for the treatment of various conditions and the general healing of the body.
For enriching cosmetics
To give cosmetic products additional properties, essential oils are added to them, which have the desired effect. As a rule, the ratio is 2-3 drops per 15 g of the product. Thus, creams, shampoos, shower gels, cosmetic oils, tonics are enriched.
Essential 2-3 drops for 1-2 tablespoons are added to the massage oil. In addition to actively affecting the metabolism of the skin, essential oils also have a tremendous therapeutic effect, relaxing and improving the emotional background. Often, essential oils of citrus fruits, conifers, and rosemary are used for massage.
The essential oil is added to the water in the aroma lamp. The required amount of aromatic substance is 3-5 drops per 15 sq. m area. An important condition in this case is the correct temperature regime: it is impossible to allow water with essential oil to boil in the capacity of the aroma lamp, since this will lead to a change in the properties of biologically active substances and the loss of most of the beneficial qualities of the ether. To prevent boiling, a small amount of water at room temperature can be added to the container from time to time. The duration of the procedure is sufficient for aromatizing the air in the room using an aroma lamp with essential oil, 15-30 minutes. The optimum water temperature in the aroma lamp tank is 40-50 ° C.
It is better to keep the temperature of the water in the bath between 40-45 ° C. For better solubility, it is recommended to mix the essential oil with an emulsifier, it can be honey and / or milk. For taking a bath, 5-7 drops of essential oil for 3-4 tablespoons of the emulsifier will be enough. Essential oils should be selected based on their properties and smell. Since the essential oil will come into contact with the skin during the bath, preference should be given to esters that are definitely not allergic to skin. The recommended duration of the procedure is 15 minutes.
For baths and saunas
To aromatize the air in a bath or sauna, 3-5 drops of essential oil added to a ladle of water will be enough. This mixture is sprinkled on wooden interior items, after which, gradually heating up, the essential oil will aromatize the room. It is not recommended to splash the mixture containing the essential oil directly onto the hot stones.
Precautions and Recommendations
Before using an essential oil for any purpose, you must make sure that there is no hypersensitivity reaction to this substance. For this, special allergological tests are carried out.
For the allergy skin test, the essential oils for the combination are applied in small amounts to a limited area of skin at the elbow or wrist. In its pure form, ether is not applied to the skin. For a sample, a mixture of 1 drop of essential oil and 1 teaspoon of any neutral vegetable oil is taken. If after 15-40 minutes there are no negative reactions, then this essential oil or a combination with it can be used. Symptoms that should alert you during the allergy skin test:
- redness at the site of application of the mixture;
- the appearance on this area of the skin of rashes, skin itching;
To prevent discomfort when inhaling essential oil vapors, there is an olfactory test. It helps assess the response of the respiratory tract to the evaporation of essential oil. The essence of the test is to carefully analyze the sensations when inhaling the evaporation of essential oil. The test is considered negative if there is no discomfort, which can be regarded as a sign of incipient edema or spasm.
Any, even mild, allergic reaction that occurs during testing when using essential oil is a contraindication to its further use.
During any procedures using essential oils, avoid eye contact. In addition, contact with the skin of concentrated essential oils should be avoided; only mixtures consisting of ether and base oil are applied to the skin. And even mixtures with a low concentration of ether cannot be worn on areas of the skin that have any damage.
Essential oils should be stored at temperatures from 5 to 25 ° C for no longer than three years from the date of production. Expired essential oil should not be used. During storage, the essential oil must be protected from sunlight.
