Unexpected convulsive tensions (tonic convulsions) often last up to three or more minutes and occur during monotonous sedentary work, when a muscle nerve is clamped in a muscle canal, long walking or hypothermia during swimming in cold water or in winter. In addition, cramps can begin due to overuse of the leg muscles, insufficient warm-up, or increased training volume. Such phenomena can also be observed in healthy people.

The cause of tonic localized seizures can also be a violation of the biochemical or electrolyte composition of the blood. They are formed with a significant loss of salts by the body, which develops with a decrease in the amount of calcium, potassium or magnesium in the blood, as well as with a lack of vitamin D.

Calf muscle cramps may result from severe anemia. Most often it occurs in pregnant women, when there is a particular deficiency of iron, which is part of hemoglobin. In this case, the metabolism of minerals is disturbed, the external manifestation of which is leg muscle cramps.

If a person's legs hurt and swell for a long time, he experiences a feeling of heaviness, which cause convulsions, which are permanent over time, this may indicate the development of varicose veins. Varicose veins are also common among expectant mothers when the growing uterus compresses the lower floors and iliac veins. As a result, varicose pressure rises.

Often, the cause of leg cramps can be a focus of irritation in the motor area of the brain. A similar phenomenon is most common with the onset of a stroke or during the formation after it, as well as with infectious lesions of the nervous system (influenza, ARVI).

Cramps in the extremities are often observed with local hypoxia (lack of oxygen) due to vascular disorders in them, as well as with changes in innervation in osteochondrosis of the spine. At the same time, the nerve roots are compressed, and the function of the motor nerves is disrupted.

Sometimes leg cramps occur in diseases of the nervous system (neurosis, tetanus). In some patients, they develop or worsen with an external stimulus (with a needle prick, alcohol abuse and poisoning). The above diseases require careful monitoring by the attending physician.
