Causes of leg cramps at night

The causes of seizures can be varied and very unexpected, so it is difficult to list them. Idiopathic are those seizures that occur for no reason or the causes of which are not established. Secondary seizures are the result of a specific medical condition. Seemingly unreasonable muscle contractions do not arise just like that, they can be associated with excessive activity of nerve endings or a heavy load during sports activities. It can also be caused by impaired blood flow to the leg muscles. In older people, the tendons become shorter, which is why seizures occur for this reason.

As for secondary seizures, the causes can be diseases, injuries and inflammation. Diabetes, flat feet, varicose veins or thyroid disorders are accompanied by cramps in the legs. Seizures can occur as a result of stress. Pregnant women experience this unpleasant feeling due to the increase in body weight, an additional load is placed on the muscles. Muscle contractions in the legs can be the result of intoxication of the body, mercury or lead poisoning. It has been noted that seizures can be triggered by certain medications.

Fight seizures

If you've only experienced a single muscle spasm, then there is nothing to worry about. And if the convulsions began to recur regularly, it is necessary not only to fight the contraction, but to look for the cause of the problem. Therefore, it is so important to consult a doctor who will prescribe an examination and appropriate treatment (if any).

If you experience leg cramps, immediately stand on the cold floor with bare feet. Try, without bending your knees, to reach the floor with your hands to properly stretch the calf muscles, which are driven by the spasm. The same exercise can be played while lying down. Stretch your leg and grab your foot with your hands, pull it towards you. To relieve pain, you can walk on your heels around the room for a few minutes, the spasm will quickly pass.

Pinch the muscle contracted by the spasm several times, then vigorously massage the sore spot and make patting movements. Rub your calf or foot (whichever muscle is cramping) with a warming ointment or a warming compress. After all these manipulations, go to bed and wrap your legs with a blanket, give them an elevated position. In extreme cases, pain relievers can be taken.

Prevention measures

Include in your diet foods rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium: bananas, nectarines, grapes, beans, oranges, pork, potatoes, tomatoes, sea fish, apricots, dates, raisins, broccoli, grapefruit, lamb, corn, and tomato juice. Give up alcohol and smoking, and cut back on sugar and coffee. Wear exceptionally comfortable shoes and avoid strenuous activity that involves long periods of walking or standing on your feet.
