The tonsils in the human body are the organ that is a kind of "gateway" that prevents bacteria from getting inside. They are found in the nasopharynx and oral cavity.

Why does a person need tonsils

All people from birth have 6 formations in the throat - tonsils. They begin to fully function by 2-3 years, reaching their maximum size by 5-6 years.

Allocate, for example, palatine, throat, etc. tonsils. This organ also has another name - tonsils. Actually glands are called palatine tonsils, the inflammation of which is defined as sore throat. They form a ring located in the oropharynx and nasopharynx.

The tonsils are made up of lymphatic tissue. In addition to preventing microbes from entering the body, they are involved in the production of blood. This organ is paired and unpaired at the same time. For example, the pharyngeal tonsil is unpaired, its growth leads to the formation of adenoids. This disease affects preschool children.

Healthy tonsils in a person are light pink in color, identical to the shade of the oral mucosa. Their redness indicates the presence of inflammation in the body. Also, healthy tonsils should not have any plaque. Sometimes the formation of unhealthy plaque is accompanied by large and small abscesses. With this condition of the body, swelling of the tonsils is possible. It is worth remembering that healthy tonsils may differ slightly in size from each other, and this is not a pathology.

Dangerous abscesses

In the normal state, the tonsils have a dense outer shell, which is dotted with depressions - lacunae. With inflammation, it acquires a loose cavernous structure. Bacteria, getting into the gaps, meet resistance from the human immune system. If immunity is lowered, the virus does not meet any obstacles. The infection can settle on the surface of the tonsils, in the lacunae, and cause, for example, lacunar sore throat.

With constant inflammation of the tonsils, "purulent" plugs can form, in which, in addition to bacteria, crumbs from food settle. And this is already fraught with bad breath.

In addition to lacunae - winding depressions, there are irregularities on the tonsils - crypts. In them, inflammation can also be localized. In this case, as a rule, washing of the tonsils is required. Moreover, at home, the desired result cannot be achieved - the aseptic solution affects only the surface of the tonsils. You should consult an otolaryngologist for the doctor to rinse with specialized devices.

Sometimes there is hypertrophy of the tonsils, mainly palatine. This is caused by chronic inflammation. Most often, babies are exposed to this phenomenon.
