Frozen (non-developing) pregnancy, in other words, intrauterine fetal death is the death of an embryo, which can happen to every woman and at any time. However, it most often occurs in the first trimester, namely up to eight weeks.

In the first two months of pregnancy, all organs and tissues are laid. The slightest pathology can be fatal to the fetus. The consequences of fading gestation in the early stages are not as serious as if it happened when the woman already feels the movement.

Modern medicine does not yet have technologies that can determine the cause of intrauterine fetal death with one hundred percent probability. You can only more or less accurately determine what exactly influenced this.

  1. Genetic factor. In most cases, the fetus stops developing due to genetic pathology at one of the stages of its development. The embryo loses its vitality, the woman's body begins to reject it. Scientists tend to believe that this is one of the mechanisms of natural selection.
  2. An infectious factor is also a fairly common sign of pregnancy fading. The causative agents of respiratory diseases, herpes, gonococcus, chlamydia, microplasma and other sexually transmitted infections disrupt the process of cell division of the fetus, which causes its death.
  3. The immune factor is divided into two types: immunological incompatibility of the child's parents and immunological diseases of the mother (for example, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, etc.).
  4. The endocrinological factor can also interfere with the normal development of the fetus and cause a stop in its development. Most often, this is an insufficient production of the hormone that preserves pregnancy - progesterone, as well as excessive synthesis of prolactin, male hormones, thyroid disease.
  5. Other factors. These usually include bad habits, an increased level of radiation in the area of permanent residence, stress, contact with hazardous substances.

Signs of a frozen pregnancy

The main and most common symptom is lower abdominal pain. It can be aching, pulling, or, conversely, sharp, cramping. Sometimes an increase in the tone of the uterus, the appearance of bloody discharge is added to it. In some cases, a woman practically does not experience discomfort or does not worry about anything at all. In addition, in the early stages, she may not even know about her pregnancy, and even more so about intrauterine fetal death.

But nevertheless, if a woman has already felt the first signs of pregnancy and they suddenly disappeared, then this with a high degree of probability indicates the fading of gestation. These signs include:

  • nausea up to vomiting;
  • drowsiness, apathy, loss of strength;
  • the appearance of unusual taste preferences;
  • hypersensitivity to odors;
  • changes in the color and shape of the nipples, enlargement of the mammary glands.

Usually, the fading of pregnancy is accurately determined only when examined on an ultrasound diagnostic apparatus. The analysis for chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is an additional diagnostic method, as well as a gynecological examination. On an ultrasound, the doctor can detect deformation of the ovum, the unevenness of its contours, prolapse to the lower part of the uterus.

If we are talking about 6-8 weeks of pregnancy, then the doctor will note the absence of fetal heartbeat, which should already be determined at this time. The menstrual and embryonic periods of pregnancy do not always coincide. Sometimes the difference between them reaches one month. It is for this reason, caused by hormonal disorders, cysts in the ovaries, stress and other factors, the absence of a heartbeat is not a guarantee of pregnancy fading.To clarify the diagnosis, ultrasound is repeated a week later. If during this time the ovum did not increase in size, the contours of the embryo did not become clearer, then the fetal development faded.

During a gynecological examination, the doctor pays attention to the condition of the cervix and the size of the entire organ. This study is biased, because visual diagnostics is sometimes complicated by the physiological characteristics of the woman herself (for example, the initially small size of the internal organs of the reproductive system).

When the embryo develops normally, the concentration of hCG in the woman's blood almost doubles every day. If there is a fading of pregnancy, then blood is donated periodically at short intervals, so that the lack of dynamics becomes obvious.

Basal temperature measurement is an additional method for diagnosing a frozen pregnancy. The temperature is measured in the rectum immediately after waking up, without getting out of bed. Progesterone causes the temperature to rise to 37, 1-37, 5 degrees. If gestation has stopped, then the level of the hormone drops, therefore, the basal temperature also decreases.

Treatment and rehabilitation

When the missed pregnancy is confirmed, the woman is hospitalized. In the early stages, the fetus and its membranes or the embryo are removed at once. In most cases, doctors try to use a gentle vacuum aspiration method under general anesthesia. In recent years, the method of medical abortion has been very popular, if indicated.

After the termination of a frozen pregnancy, rehabilitation is required. The woman is assigned to take oral contraceptives for at least three months. Also, the doctor should try to understand the causes of intrauterine fetal death and eliminate them.

If the termination of a frozen pregnancy was performed correctly, then the situation will not cause any harm to the woman's reproductive health. More than 90 percent of women who survived a missed pregnancy later become pregnant and carry healthy children.
