The main cause of disability and premature mortality in economically developed countries is diseases of the cardiovascular system. These diseases have become "younger" - they are diagnosed in people under 35 years of age. One of the reasons for this growth, as scientists have found, is urbanization and its consequences: stress, unfavorable environmental conditions, poor nutrition, etc.

What is vascular atherosclerosis

One of the serious diseases of the cardiovascular system is atherosclerosis. What is it and what danger does it carry? Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease associated with metabolic disorders in the body, as a result of which a thickening of settled cholesterol and connective tissue structures forms on the walls of blood vessels, which together form an atherosclerotic plaque. At the same time, the lumen of the vessel narrows, deforms, and the proper blood supply to organs and tissues receiving blood from it is disrupted. Predisposing factors for the development of atherosclerosis: - genetic predisposition; - smoking; - alcohol abuse; - eating foods with a high content of saturated fatty acids (animal fats); - high blood cholesterol; - diabetes. In atherosclerosis, large vessels, such as the aorta, arteries that supply the brain and limbs, are often affected. The atherosclerotic plaque has a certain property - it can break off from the vessel wall and circulate freely with the blood flow throughout the body. Meeting on its way arteries with a smaller diameter, it closes their lumen and disrupts the blood supply to nearby organs and tissues. So by closing the lumen of the vessels of the brain, a stroke develops, with obstruction of the vessels of the heart - a heart attack, and of the extremities - gangrene. For atherosclerosis of a running course, the following symptoms are characteristic: - with damage to the vessels of the brain - ischemic conditions, strokes, dizziness, impaired speech, coordination and movements; - with damage to the vessels of the heart - pain in the heart region, violation of the rhythm of contraction of the heart muscle; - with damage to the vessels lower extremities - pain in the calf muscles, first when walking, and then at rest; feeling of numbness in the foot; blackening of the skin; trophic ulcers. If any of the above symptoms appear, contact your doctor immediately. Give blood periodically to calculate the quantitative content of total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides.
