Botkin's disease has several names. Hepatitis A has another definition that sounds like "dirty hands disease." From it, the way the disease spreads becomes clear. If in Western Europe, upon reaching the age of 55, only 60% of the population encounters the virus, and most of the sick bring the disease from vacations spent in third countries, then in some regions of Asia and Africa, sooner or later, everyone will fall ill with jaundice.

The hepatitis A virus infects liver cells and is excreted from the patient's body along with feces. Moreover, in order to get sick, you will have to deal with excrement directly. Most often, infection occurs through contaminated water. The transition to the use of boiled water and water does not at all become a guarantee of protection against infection. To get sick, sometimes those drops that remain on the fruit after washing them under the tap are enough.

The source of infection can be any object touched by the patient after visiting the toilet: flush cistern button, door handles, towels, cutlery, dishes, handrails in public transport, etc. Foods can be littered with viruses, too. At the same time, the group of particular risk is represented by ice cubes, insufficiently fried fish and seafood, ice cream, fruits and vegetables eaten raw, etc.

The particular insidiousness of the hepatitis A virus lies in the fact that it is most active during the first 3 weeks after infection, that is, long before the patient develops yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes. As soon as a person turns yellow, his infectiousness is significantly reduced, and after a week it disappears altogether.

The first symptoms of the disease, expressed in loss of appetite, refusal of certain foods, nausea, pain in muscles and joints, as well as a slight rise in temperature, appear in a patient 15-30 days after infection. The second phase of the disease occurs a little later and is characterized by developing jaundice. In this case, the urine turns dark brown, and the stool, on the contrary, becomes discolored. In general, Botkin's disease lasts from 2 to 3 weeks, but doctors are aware of cases when recovery was delayed up to six months. The older the person is, the more severe the symptoms will be. In young children, the disease can be almost invisible, without yellowing and other typical signs.
