The tongue is an organ made up of muscles covered with a mucous membrane on the outside. It has lymphoid formations and glands, as well as nerve endings and blood vessels. The tongue consists of a root, directly a body and an end. There are a large number of diseases in which pains are observed in various areas of the tongue, some of them cause these sensations at its root.

Abscess and phlegmon of the tongue

This infection often occurs when the integrity of the mucous membrane of the tongue is disturbed due to injuries of various kinds: wounds with sharp edges of carious teeth, not very high-quality dentures or simple biting with teeth.

Also, the reason may be: wounds with fish bones and other sharp thin objects, insect bites, gunshot and other types of injuries. The infection can penetrate through the blind hole of the tongue, which has not completely tightened, as well as with ulcerative stomatitis, sore throat, or inflammation of the tonsil of the tongue.

Symptoms of an abscess of the tongue

This disease manifests itself first in the form of a small painful compaction in one of the halves of the tongue, then the borders of the focus are slightly smoothed out, and the tongue becomes less swollen, especially from the side of the abscess location.

It becomes very difficult to talk and eat food, with severe pain. The body temperature may rise over 38oC. An increase in the lymph nodes located under the jaw and chin is also noted.

An abscess can form at the root of the tongue between the muscles located under it in the place of their transition directly into the tongue. At first, the patient may complain of painful swallowing, after which the body temperature rises and chills appear.

There is a lack of mobility of the tongue and painful sensations when pressing on its root. The next stage in the development of the disease is the appearance of puffiness and an increase in the size of the tongue, which leads to a feeling of suffocation in a person and profuse salivation.

Phlegmon symptoms

This disease is characterized by diffuse infiltration and swelling of the tongue. A strongly enlarged tongue cannot fit in the oral cavity and protrudes outward. There is a dirty gray coating on the tongue and bad breath.

A person's speech becomes illegible, hoarseness appears, copious saliva, viscous in consistency. At the same time, breathing is difficult, the body temperature can reach 39oC. The lymph nodes are greatly enlarged and painful. A formed abscess is most often found on the lower surface of the tongue.

Treatment of diseases

Tongue abscesses are opened with small longitudinal incisions. In case of phlegmon disease, the incisions are carried out, depending on the testimony of the doctor, on the back and on the lateral surface of the tongue.

In the case of deep ulcers located at the root of the tongue, they are opened by cutting through the skin along the midline of the area under the chin.

After the opening of the purulent focus occurs, the patient instantly feels relief. Pain when swallowing disappears. Together with surgical treatment, antibiotic treatment is recommended. Also, mouthwashes are prescribed with warm decoctions of chamomile or sage.
