Safe sex is a very important moment in an intimate relationship between a man and a woman. Condoms are considered the most common form of protection against a number of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. But some people have a delicate problem that complicates intimacy - a condom allergy.
Features of the development of allergies
The main material in the production of condoms is latex. This substance has a natural plant origin, it is obtained from the sap of the rubber tree - hevea. Latex contains carbohydrates, minerals, latex proteins and phospholipids. But proteins are considered the most powerful allergens, they are the ones that cause adverse reactions in women and men.
Latex condoms are reliable and durable, therefore they are recommended for use by the World Health Organization. People are surrounded by many objects that contain latex: rubber gloves, pool caps, balloons. If your body is protesting against condoms, then you need to make sure that it is the latex that is causing you allergies. Indeed, often an allergic reaction is caused by spermicidal lubricants, aromatic substances, dyes that are added to products.
Symptoms of a condom allergy
This type of allergic reaction can occur in any of the partners: both the woman and the man. First of all, there is dryness of the mucous membranes, redness, itching and burning, urticaria, and swelling of the genitals may occur. These symptoms are found after removing the condom. In rare cases, there are attacks of suffocation, swelling of the mucous membranes, difficulty breathing and lacrimation.
If, after the first contact with the use of a condom, similar symptoms appear, you should immediately contact a specialist for help (dermatologist, allergist). Often, condom allergy is confused by symptoms with the initial stage of a sexually transmitted disease. The doctor must schedule an examination. Body-specific tests will disprove or confirm the assumption that latex is the culprit. According to the diagnosis, the doctor will prescribe treatment.
What to do?
If your partner or you actually have an allergy, but not to latex, then you can try changing the brand of condoms. Sometimes this is enough to get rid of an urgent problem. Prefer water-based, fragrance-free lubricated contraception. Read all the information on the packaging carefully before purchasing.
If you suffer from an allergic reaction to latex, then you will have to completely stop using condoms. Polyurethane condoms can be found commercially, but they are less protective. Therefore, it would be wiser to consult a doctor and choose other methods of contraception.
